I'm a 25 year old 3rd year medical student currently residing in Loma Linda, CA. I got into triathlon at the sprint level just to try it out in undergrad but never really took it seriously since. Then when I got to medical school, fitness went by the wayside and so did my sanity with it. I found myself in need of a leave of absence from the overwhelming and crippling stress and anxiety that came with my education. I needed to find a way to convince myself that hard work and dedication was still the way to success. The only thing I could think of was an Ironman. So just like that, I signed up for Ironman Canada. This probably saved me and is likely the only reason I was able to bounce back and find success in school later on. The lessons I learned preparing for that race, the rough times I faced in preparation, and the surreal euphoria I experienced when I stepped onto that mat has made me who I am today.
Since then, I have gotten involved as an officer in my school of medicine running club and helped to bring it back to life. In addition to that, sharing my passion with the co-members has turned their sights on triathlon and we often have group pool sessions etc. Some people joke that it seems like I am more passionate about triathlon now than I am about my education and that may be almost true. The daily training is my escape and my joy at the end (or beginning) of a long day. It provides a balanced lifestyle for a health and wellness that I love as I am passionate about preventive and lifestyle change as the keys to good health.
