After University and 4 years in the U.S. Army I needed physical activity to keep my sanity…for real. 2 tours in Iraq as an infantryman let me experience some of the best and worst humanity has to offer. After coming home I realized I was involved with another battle that was more internal, more personal, one that at the time wasn’t in the news or even had a name for. Depression and isolation is as dangerous as bullets and IEDS and I thought I was alone to fight my demons. It was through physical activity (running and cycling groups) with other vets that I realized I wasn’t alone in my fight. I quickly came to realize that the more active I kept my body, it lead to a healthier mind. Our runs and rides act as group therapy. When our lungs are not bursting from a hill climb or sprint, we’re checking up on each other to make sure everything is ok. We came up with a saying when we welcome new vets into our groups, ‘just because we’re home, doesn’t mean the fight is over’ It’s been 8 years since I first started running and cycling with vets. Now I have a wonderful family (including 6 month old twins!) a great career, and a healthy mind set. Born in VT, currently living in CT
