I came to cycling later in life and just a few years ago. Knee surgeries ended my running and basketball career and I was bored stiff of elliptical in stuffy gyms. My Ironman friends piqued my interest in cycling--one group ride and I was hooked. I had never experienced something where I could work *hard* for four hours straight and love every minute of it. The fresh air, the sustained power, and that absolutely spent feeling when you're done. From there I got into road races and found my real love in crit racing. The combination of tactics and speed made every race exciting and different. I am extremely fortunate to live in Austin where we have one of the best weekly crit series in the world (The Driveway Series).
Then I got hit by a car.
Was taken by ambulance and suffered several injuries, including to my spine. I'm still recovering in some ways. But I was lucky to get by with no career ending (or life ending injuries). I've fought back to rehab and retrain harder than anything I've ever done in my life. I started racing again. Terrifying, but rewarding. By the end of 2019, I became the #1 ranked Cat 4 crit racer in America (based on USAC points). Given that I only started racing in 2017 and had the setback of over a year due to the careless driver, I'm very proud of my short cycling career.
