Off-Day Activity | I have way too many hobbies but I always enjoy time in the wood shop making bowls on the lathe. |
I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis in 2007. At the time, although I was active, I was not a very healthy person; I didn't eat well and was a smoker. After my diagnosis, I had to make the decision that I wasn't going to let this disease win. I stopped smoking, changed my eating habits and started exercising regularly. At the time I couldn't ride my mountain bike any longer so I started road biking. I've always had a competitive nature so the road biking turned into racing time trials. In the next couple of years, I became stronger and my health stabilized. Over the following years, I returned to running (I had been a cross-country runner in high school), learned to swim and started competing in triathlons. In 2018 I completed my first Ironman. I didn't race during the Covid years of 2020 and 2021 but returned to racing this year. My highlight of the year was a personal best Ironman finish at IMLP with only 4 months of focused training after recovering from a skiing injury in December. I plan on continuing to race for as long as my health allows and show that it is possible to be a competitive athlete despite having MS. My home is in upstate New York, north of Plattsburgh. To keep the roof over my head, I'm the chief technology officer for a regional telecommunications carrier. I have two wonderful daughters who are grown and making successes of their lives and live with my awesome and ever supportive life partner Shannon.
